LON - Local Operating Network

LonWorks was designed by the American firm Echelon back in 1988.

LonWorks or, as it was dubbed, LON (Local Operating Network), is a technology in which all information about the system is available for all interested producers, including the protocol on which the system was based.

Echelon has developed the technology and provided access to it for the producers. In Denmark we have a number of producers of components for LonWorks in various areas, e.g.:

  • Automatic control in buildings
  • Industry
  • CTS
  • Lighting
  • Heating
  • Ventilation etc.

The idea is that every single component, regardless of function, is intelligent. This means that every component has a CPU-chip, known as a neuron in the LonWorks’ terminology. Every neuron has its own unique address as identification.

The software connections between components are made on PC programming software in order to achieve the wanted functionality.

After this programming, the PC can be removed from the network and the installation will work independently. Various media can be used for transfer of the bus signals. For example:

  • Twisted pair cable
  • Supply cable
  • Fibre cable
  • Coac-cable
  • RF-signals
  • IR-signals
Of course it is possible to add interfaces to the system in order to monitor various parameters and make changes e.g. change a set temperature in one or several rooms or change the clock control.
